Coventry MIND has started a new befriending service. The service aims to help people with mental health issues get back into community life by providing friendship, support, reassurance and encouragement. They are looking for volunteers to act as befrienders. Volunteer befrienders are matched with an individual from a similar age group and the same gender so they can go our on a social basis, which might include visiting the cinema, public house, keep fit, shopping or going out for a meal. The aim is to relieve isolation and help the individual rebuild their social skills and networks of friends. Training and support is given to volunteers and expenses are reimbursed. Volunteers are asked to commit themselves to two hours a week at various times of day, evenings and at weekends. To get more information or volunteer contact the Befriending Co-ordinator, Debbie Dalton, on 7663 2644.
