Hillfields Young Peoples Group
Hillfields benefits from a range of organisations providing activities for young people including WATCH, Hillfields Young Peoples Centre, Coventry Sporting Futures and the African Caribbean Young Peoples Centre. These sites provide a range of resources including sport and leisure activities, recording studios, performance areas and access to ICT equipment.
YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD MATTERS
As part of the YNM initiative, Sporting Futures and the youth service are working in partnership to deliver the young peoples agenda. This process involves establishing a group of young people from the local area who will act as a gateway for all youth information to pass through whilst working closely with youth providers to deliver a joint timetable of activities that benefit local young people. ."The young people will embark on a journey as a group to work towards writing a Neighbourhood Service Agreement for Hillfields in March 2010. The agreement will tighten the relationship between groups of young people and providers and will tie in with the integrated youth support service as proposed within the government's Youth Matters strategy documents.
The main aim of this is for young people to have access to positive activities, advice, information and guidance and targeted support ensuring that young people are involved in the design, delivery and management of programmes that are effectively co-ordinatedThe young people will also be provided with relevant taining, giving them young people the necessary skills and abilities to move forward as young leaders and role models in their community
Nicola Capok, Project Co-ordinator for Sporting Futures who is leading on the Young People YNM agenda, said, "This is an exciting project that will give young people the opportunity to have a voice in their local community. It is the first in Coventry to be trialled and if successful will be used as a model of good practice across all areas of the city next year. It will also enable us as youth providers to work in partnership with young people to design a timetable of local activities that are beneficial to young people. Too many projects are set up with out consulting local young people and are designed solely to meet targets and agencies needs. This project will overcome such barriers and enable all youth activity in Hillfields to be fed through the established group. These young people will hopefully then go on to become young leaders themselves through the vast amount of knowledge and experience they will have gained."
The main aim of this is for young people to have access to positive activities, advice, information and guidance and targeted support ensuring that young people are involved in the design, delivery and management of programmes that are effectively co-ordinated."
