Description and Objectives
This project is concerned with the development of active citizenship. It seeks to work with young people, their families and local schools and is supported by a range of public sector organisations.

The project seeks to:

  • Foster the development of good citizenship among young people in Hillfields.
  • Reduce social exclusion
  • Reduce juvenile crime and anti social behaviour
  • Reduce the numbers of victims of crime
  • Enhance the quality and safety of the local environment
  • Develop safer routes to school initiatives
  • Improve road safety awareness for both young people and adults

The project will work with young people and their families to identify local area problems, consider solutions and develop Action Plans. There will be some scope within the project to fund Action Plans. The young people and their families will be supported in making applications for additional funding where appropriate.

The project itself will have 4 main components:

  • Making roads safer places – tackling issues related to road safety and routes to school
  • Community scan – environmental audits and action plans
  • Crime and Social Behaviour Citizenship Project – developing Community Safety Action Plans
  • Emergency Services literacy project – strengthening the links between young people, their families and the emergency services, raising literacy standards and reducing anti-social behaviour

The project specifically seeks to meet the requirements laid down in the following sections of the Hillfields Action Plan ERDF Measure 2:

  • Sub action b) Environmental enhancement initiatives – improvements to the street scene…improving surrounding public leisure facilities

The making roads safer places and community scan components of the project will directly impact upon this designated priority area. The project specifically aims to deliver 6 separate initiatives (see 5a Outputs)

  • Sub action c) actions to tackle crime and improve security…

The Crime and Social Behaviour Citizenship Project and Community Scan both seek to involve the community in decisions relating to improving security in local parks. 4 separate initiatives are planned.

  • Sub action d) and security awareness campaigns…Anti vandalism programmes…The development of the capacity of the community to take action to address crime.

The Crime and Social Behaviour Citizenship Project, Community Scan and the Emergency Services Literacy project all seek to reduce crime and anti social behaviour and promote active responsible citizenship. This work will be based upon a partnership between young people, their families, the Emergency Services, Agenda 21, the Youth Justice Team and the Education Service. Direct involvement with Area Co-ordination will be essential.

In general terms the project has clear identifiable benefits for Hillfields community. It seeks to directly target some of the key priorities laid down in the Hillfields URBAN Action Plan.
