Aims and Activities Covered by the Project
The aim of this project is to give long term unemployed people aged 25 and over, who reside in the Hillfields area, the opportunity to gain vocational qualification in one of the construction building trades. They will be employed by an Employer on a £1 million development project in the heart of the participant’s own community.

The specific aims of the project are to:

  • skill up local unemployed people, so as they can take advantage of the jobs being created throughout the city;
  • to ensure that these trainees have the opportunity to gain real site experience as this has been identified as a barrier for people trying to access trade employment in the industry;
  • to make the experience of training and qualification attainment worthwhile to the participant by offering them an employment
  • contract with the employer for the duration of the on site element;
  • to introduce local unemployed Hillfields residents to potential employers and to breakdown postcode prejudice;
  • to work in partnership with local Hillfields Initiatives such as The Network Project in order to maximise opportunities for local people in Hillfields;
  • to support the Government’s New Deal for 25 + Pilot by encouraging employers to take on this client;
  • to test and measure the value of employing unemployed people with no previous experience in construction on developments of this size – (in all other wage subsidy schemes participants have had to be skilled to NVQ level 2 before they can access the subsidy). This has been an Employer requirement.
