The Hillfields Community has long been in need of its own library and with the help of the European Regional Development Fund and St Peter’s Centre we have been able to provide a brand new twenty-first century Community Library. The library opened on 12 January 2004 in the St Peter’s Centre, Charles St, Hillfields and is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 9.00-5.00 (closed 1.00-2.00 for lunch). With a range of books, talking books, CDs and DVDs and a state of the art computer suite with free access to the Internet the library has something for everyone. The Official opening was performed by Jim Cunningham MP, Coventry South on Friday 5 March 2004. The opening was attended by children from two local schools, Southfields and St Mary’s and St Bendict’s for a morning of poetry and dance. In the afternoon local people and community groups were invited to participate in a dance workshop and afterwards they sampled an array of mouth-watering refreshments from around the globe. Local people have already voted the library a hit and since it opened over 500 people have visited the library and almost 500 books and other items have been issued. 400 enquiries have been made on every topic from homework to how to find out something on the Internet. Computer drop-in sessions have been very popular on Monday and Friday mornings when a tutor is available to answer any computer problems. If you would like to use a computer, find information or come and have a look around the library, then staff will do their utmost to help. You can find out more information by calling into the library or telephoning 76633878 during opening hours.
