Way of the Goose

What is the Way of the Goose?

The Way of the Goose is a production and training programme for the long-term unemployed in Coventry.

Why the Way of the of the Goose?

Have you ever seen geese fly in v-formation? Geese fly together. They encourage one another as they go. They take turns to lead the team. This is the ethos on which the Way of the Goose is based.

The project's objectives are to train and equip men and women who have been long-term unemployed, disadvantaged or socially excluded. Through the use of a supportive environment and good group dynamics, the project aims to help them back into full-time, meaningful employment.

How will the Way of The Goose work?

The on-the-job training will create a work environment as close as possible to the real thing, so as to be able to identify possible "relapse" situations, and deal with any problems as they arise. The project hopes to promote thought and behaviour patterns that will ensure a successful outcome in future job hunting.

The Way of the Goose deals with all areas of a person's life where appropriate; because of this unique approach, the programme's effectiveness is enhanced. The approach emphasises teamwork, training in specific skills and achieving recognised NVQ qualifications if possible.

The work-based programme itself will last for approximately one year. Inbuilt are specific Care Plans, tailored to the individual's needs and abilities.

The project aims to encourage not only productivity but also creativity to draw out a person's full potential.

Who can go the Way of the Goose?

Have you ever heard of people described as "unemployable"? Men and women who have been out of work for many months may have lost motivation and lack the skills to get back into work. They may not know how to get help. The Way of the Goose is designed to help such people.

It is open to all who pass the interview procedure, and have been out of work for over six months.
