"Mum, dad and my sister and myself went under the stairs. It was pitch black. I could hear the bombs dropping, then Dad said to Mum, 'This one's for us, Jess' and he was right. I heard this whistling sound and it was a direct hit on the house. Dust and plaster came down on us, the wall cracked open, dad got cramp in his leg. My mother got out of the door, she sank to her knees and started to pray."

"We got out of the house and walked down Highfield Road towards the football ground. A lady was on the doorstep shouting for help with her house ablaze behind her. Although it was November the air was warm, we could see the fires burning everywhere. Not being able to find a way through, we went back up Highfield Road to a street shelter and spend the night here. My family lost everything that night and it took years for mom and dad to get a home together again."
