Some landmarks in the transport history of Hillfields

1768 Coventry Canal was constructed passing through the district on its way to Coventry Canal Basin. 
18th Century During the century Stoney Stanton Road was constructed as a turnpike or toll road to Leicester. There was a tollgate, called the Harnall Tollgate, near Harnall Lane.
1899 Priestley's Bridge on Stoney Stanton Road was rebuilt at a wider scale.  
1900 Two new tramway lines through the district were completed and the the first tramcar ran on 18th January. The city's main tram depot was located on Stoney Stanton Road near Priestley's Bridge. The site included a power generating station to power the network. 
1940 Following the Coventry Blitz, the whole of the tram system closed down.
1969 Work on Stage 5 of Coventry Ring Road, abuting Hillfields, was started in 1967 and completed in 1969.
1986 A new bus garage in Wheatley Street was opened and in 1987 the old bus garage in Harnall Lane, which had previously been the tram depot closed and the site was redeveloped mainly for housing.
1988 Sky Blue Way was opened, dividing Hillfields from Far Gosford Street. The road was named by Tracey Hancox, aged 16, in a competition organised by the local newspaper.
