The
original Swanswell Tavern on the corner of Swanswell Street and
Primrose Hill in 1910.
"A
generation ago when the pool in Swanswell Park used to freeze
solid, William Stanley, an enterprising landlord at the
Swanswell Tavern, would serve sandwiches and home-brewed ale to
skaters.
"One particular hard winter in 1845, early in the day he'd
walk over the ice to light a fire at the hut on the island in
the centre of the pool. He'd sweep it clean and set out chairs
and tables from the pub. There would be briskness in the inn
too, with much roasting, boiling and baking in preparation for
the needs of the many skaters and other who came to enjoy
themselves on the ice. At night torches and lanterns would be
lit and placed around the banks of the pool and on the island
and there would be skating under the soft light of the
moon."
Bernard C Moore, the Mount Cheylesmore as printed in the
Coventry Evening Telegraph.
