Positive Futures

The Positive Futures Project focuses on the St. Michael’s ward in Coventry. The vision for the Positive Futures Project is to increase the range of sports activities locally, providing greater quality of life for young people in the area and increasing regular participation and developing lifelong interest in sport and physical activity. It also aims to reduce instances of youth offending and drug misuse in the area through engaging with young people and in partnership with others diverting  them into sports and other leisure activities through increased awareness of drug related issues, preventative measures and support networks.

The Positive Futures Project funds a local Sports Development Officer to focus on meeting the needs of young people and using sport as the tool to engage and actively work with them. The success of the project will rely on extensive partnership working. The project will develop the local infrastructure of sports opportunities locally as well as linking to citywide programmes. It will also incorporate an Intensive block programme of sports activities and include a referral scheme to ensure that young people identified at risk or part of the criminal justice system can be targeted. The project aims to challenge how sport currently meets the needs in areas like the St. Michael’s Ward and the impact it can have on young people most at risk of becoming involved in drugs and crime.
