NRF Hillfields Project Ideas

PROJECT APPROVED

Project Ref: EDU/02/03

Theme or project title:

Raising the Attainment of Black and Asian Pupils (Study Support - out of school hours learning)

Brief description of the project

To raise the educational attainment of Black and Asian pupils:

·        By establishing or strengthening links between schools in Hillfields, Black and Asian families and local support groups through a series of Study Support partnership projects and activities.

·        A suite on the first floor of the WATCH offices in Hillfields would form the base of many of the activities.

Primary Activities

·        Computer equipment (with internet access) would be available with tutor support during the day for parents seeking to improve their own computer skills.

·        Parents would also have the opportunity to complete activities that will enable them to come to a better understanding of the school curriculum that their children experience and develop strategies to ensure they are offering the most effective support possible. These sessions would take place at Osaba and would be for parents of pupils in primary and secondary schools.

·        Support to parents of Black and Asian pupils would also be available to enable them to support their children effectively if they experience difficulties in school. This support would be additional to the service already offered by Parental Partnership and differentiated to the cultural needs of the families involved. Issues covered will include 'how to become a parent governor' and 'early intervention strategies'

·        Osaba's main contribution to the previous activity will be to support women with these issues. It is hoped that a support group will develop out of these sessions so that experiences can be shared.

·        The specific focus for sessions would develop out of consultation with perspective clients. A crèche facility would be available for parents of pre-school age children in partnership with Osaba.

·        The same suite would be used in the evening to provide sessions for school age pupils. As homework clubs are offered in most local schools, these sessions would be related to school (and wider social) issues rather than curriculum based activities. Two evenings a week would be set aside for Key stage three and four pupils. A further two would be dedicated to key stage two pupils and would incorporate literacy and numeracy support if that is required in preparation for transfer to secondary.

·        Specific Study Support activities would be developed after consulting a sample group of pupils but would focus on issues that impact on educational achievement: for example: cultural identity, self-esteem, health, values and peer relationships through a range of activities including creative and performing arts. Osaba has run Raising Aspiration conferences in the past. The Study Support project will extend the work already covered by the organisation to meet the needs of pupils and parents.

·        Residential activities (weekends and school holidays) would be an important element of this work.

·        These sessions would be run in partnership with local schools and communities to ensure that courses are relevant and sensitive to the needs of particular cultural groups.

·        It will be important to recruit young Black and Asian professionals (particularly teachers and youth workers) to act as mentors to pupils

·        An important part of the work of this group will be to analyse information collected during the monitoring process to ensure that the services delivered to young people remain relevant. Contributions from established Youth Groups in the City would be a key element of this process.

·        To develop links with the City's local services and Education and Business Partnership Centres to develop out of school hours projects that enable pupils to experience a range of activities designed to increase cultural awareness and subsequently attainment. Possible partners include the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, The Museum of British Road Transport and the Jaguar Education and Business Partnership Centre Coventry City Football Club Study Support Centre.
