Hillfields Young People’s Centre
This project seeks to significantly improve the facilities and provision on offer to young people in Hillfields by remodelling the Hillfields Young People's Centre (HYPC), Yardley Street into a more effective multi-agency resource.
As a former community Centre, HYPC already represents the most substantive 'free standing' piece of youth provision in the area, but its internal configuration limits its capacity to deliver. With a one off injection of funds, we have been advised that it can be redesigned to provide a new and stimulating environment for interdisciplinary work with young people. This work will focus on young people's personal/social development with an emphasis on proactively addressing the following 'intractable' issues' namely:
I. School under achievement, disaffection and exclusion
II. Harmful and high-risk behaviour, including:
· involvement in crime / community conflict
· problematic drug use
· unsafe sexual practices (resulting in unwanted pregnancy and the spreading of sexually transmitted infections)
III. Alienation from training and work
IV. Social and political exclusion
V. Inequality of access to other support and services.
The Project aims to:
ü Provide a safe and credible environment for free association and learning.
ü Provide direct access to specialist support and advice - provided by trusted staff and volunteers who have a developed understanding of the issues facing young people.
ü Provide a diverse range of developmental activity programmes and informal education projects - designed with young people around their needs and interests to promote learning and the acquisition of new skills
ü Equip young people with the skills, confidence and motivation to articulate their own needs; and so participate more fully in Community and/or Service: consultations, development and decision-making.
ü Work actively to bridge the gap between the generations within the local community.
ü Offer support and advice to parents
