Theme or project title: Weaver's Green

Brief description of the project?

We aim to

• improve the physical appearance of the area and raise peoples esteem and respect of their environment,
• encourage residents to become involved in community matters, to take responsibility, and to experience collective achievements,
• offer opportunities for people to meet, discuss, and put forward ideas towards improving life and community spirit in the area.
• Used by the community since 1971 and now threatened by private housing development, we aim to preserve this indispensable open space for the future, and establish indisputable community ownership.
• Under the auspices of the Countryside Agency's Doorstep Green Programme we aim to acquire the land at no.66-74 Freehold St., and thereafter to hold, develop, and maintain the Green as an area of open space for the benefit and use without charge for informal recreational purposes and community events.
• within the green create a safe off the road play area for children aged 0-11 years.

Which other organisations will be involved in the project?

The Countryside Agency will guide us through the entire project. The CWCo-operative Development Agency will support us with business development and training needs. WATCH Hillfields and West Midlands Urban Planning Aid will assist us with community consultations. The Warwickshire Wildlife Trusts' assistance will be instrumental to solve environmental issues and to produce a budgeted design and management plan. It is envisaged that the Football Supporters Club, the Hillfields Youth Activity Centre and the Jalalabad Mosque and Education Centre will take an active interest.
