A new high-tech lettings project in Hillfields has been backed by six local housing associations. Hillfields HomeChoice is one of 27 choice-based lettings schemes being launched nationwide with government money, and the only one in the West Midlands.

Instead of allocating a particular property to applicants, it will advertise details of every property available and the criteria for letting, in the Coventry Evening Telegraph’s property pages, and on the Hillfields HomeChoice website.  Prospective tenants can then ‘bid’ for homes by indicating which they are interested in.

Now six ‘not for profit’ landlords have signed up to the project, which has been awarded a £500,000 government grant, and is expected to go live in November.

Whitefriars Homes (North), and Touchstone, Focus, Orbit, Mercian and Accord housing associations together manage 1800 properties in Hillfields.  All will participate in what they see as a fairer and more user-friendly lettings system which puts prospective tenants in the driving seat.

Technology will play a key role, as public internet access points are launched in local and city outlets.
